What’s in the News for Women Truck Drivers and Women-Owned Carriers
We have previously reported on the growing number of opportunities women truck drivers and leaders have within the transportation industry. Not only are driver and truck technician shortages expected to lead to improvements in working conditions and wages that make these career paths more attractive to women, but many companies are increasingly aware of the benefits of adding women to professional and leadership roles within the organization. In addition, there is considerable market place and legislative momentum for businesses in all industries to reduce or eliminate gender gaps in salary and compensation packages.
“We are excited about the changes we see happening in transportation industry that make trucking a more attractive career option for women,” said Tom Glazier, Vice President of transportation factoring company My Factoring Brokers Inc. “From manufacturers who are making modifications that make driving a semi-truck and trailer easier for drivers of smaller stature to organizations who recognize that adding women to the ranks in driver and a myriad of other professional roles makes their business better, we are convinced that the future of the industry is going to be bright for women who choose a career in trucking.”
In the News: What’s Happening for Women Truck Drivers Right Now
Without question, there have never been more opportunities for women truck drivers and women who want to carve out a professional career in the transportation industry in finance, marketing and carrier ownership. For instance:
- In “Truckers Smash Stereotypes with Boost from Women Outdriving Men” Bloomberg Business reports that women drivers are outperforming male counterparts when it comes to accidents, inspections and compliance issues.
- In “The Next Big Thing in US Trucking: Female Drivers” CNBC explains that U.S. carriers are recruiting women truck drivers to help offset the nation’s severe truck driver shortage; in part, succeeding because the gender pay gap is often a non-issue since company drivers are all paid the same (by the mile or load of the percentage).
- In “Women Get the Attention of Major Truck Manufacturers” the Journal Sentinel Newspapers describe how semi-truck manufacturer Ryder System Inc. is pioneering research to identify female-friendly design changes, incorporating them into their truck designs, and encouraging other manufacturers to follow suit.
Women Truck Drivers Should Consider Joining the Women In Trucking Association (WIT)
Founded by current president and CEO Ellen Voie in 2007, Women In Trucking exists to “encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women employed in trucking.” Though it has been represented at trucking conferences since its inception, last year the Association held their first conference “Accelerate! Conference and Expo” in Dallas, TX with plans to make the conference an annual event.
WIT has more than 4,500 members including carriers, owner-operators, industry professionals, corporate industry affiliates like My Factoring Brokers, drivers and students. In addition to Women in Trucking founder and CEO Ellen Voie the Association has four officers and a 9-member board of directors, representative of some of the nation’s largest transportation organizations. With more than 4,000 corporate and individual members in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, Sweden, South Africa, and New Zealand, Women In Trucking says it works to bring women into the trucking industry and support them in their careers.
